Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery – or ‘Monty’, as he became known during the Second World War – was one of Britain’s most successful military commanders of the Twentieth Century. In 1940 he commanded an infantry division during the evacuation of Dunkirk and in 1942 he led the Eighth Army to victory at the Second Battle of El Alamein, which turned the tide of the North African campaign.
For Britain, this was a major turning point in the war. As Churchill famously wrote, “before Alamein we never had a victory, after Alamein we never had a defeat”.
