California-based PickUp USA Fitness opens gym in Noblesville – Indianapolis Business Journal – Indianapolis Business Journal

A fitness club franchise in Noblesville is providing basketball players looking for a pickup game with a new place to hoop it up.
Pasadena, California-based PickUp USA Fitness entered the Indiana market this fall at 15375 Herriman Blvd., north of East 146th Street near State Road 37. The fitness club is in a soft opening period with a grand opening planned in November.
PickUp USA Fitness founder Jordan Meinster opened his first gym in 2011 in Irwindale, California. The company began offering franchises in 2016 and now has 12 locations in operation with nine more in the works, according to its website.
The 18,000-square-foot gym in Noblesville features two full NBA-sized basketball courts, one half-court, a 4,000-square-foot weight room, cardio and training rooms, and a Dr. Dish basketball workout machine, said Scott McClelland, who is the franchise co-owner with his wife, Stephanie.
McClelland said the concept for PickUp USA Fitness began as a place for adults to play pickup basketball in a more organized setting than at a traditional gym or recreational center.
The Noblesville location also has a youth development league that practices each week and plays on Saturdays. It will also have winter and spring leagues for children and teens and will sponsor an AAU team for some of its more skilled players.
McClelland, whose three sons are involved in sports, said he thinks the concept makes sense, especially in Indiana.
“We certainly think that’s something a lot of people in our area are willing to spend money on—on their kids and their kids’ experiences,” he said.
From 6-10 p.m. on weekdays, referees officiate 10-minute pickup games for adults. Players will type a number when they arrive at the gym that will enter them into a queue for an available game, McClelland said.
An app is available for players to see how many people are playing at any given time.
Each group of five players will receive a different colored jersey and losing teams will have the opportunity to get back into the queue and play again.
The gym will also offer court rentals to groups for $150. McClelland hired former professional basketball player Jared Newsom to be the Noblesville gym’s general manager. Newsom played for the Sioux Falls Skyforce and Bakersfield Jam in the NBA D-League.
“There’s all kinds of basketball-related things,” McClelland said. “It’s kind of that place to hang out and feel comfortable.”
McClelland is a small business attorney with Kokomo-based Butcher Ball Lowry McMahan & McClelland LLP. He said he hopes to open three PickUp USA Fitness locations in the Indianapolis area. He signed a five-year lease on the Noblesville building in April with an option to extend for another five years.
Westfield-based contractor Chapman Browning installed the basketball courts over a seven-week period in late summer.
Memberships currently cost $39.99 and will increase to $45 following the November grand opening.
