With Wimbledon at the centre-court of many minds this week, we’ve not been able to help ourselves from casting an admiring eye at the great British polo shirt!
The polo arrived in Britain in 1926, when Rene Lacoste, the seven-time tennis Grand Slam champion, decided that the existing tennis attire was too stiff and uncomfortable to play in. His new design featured short, cuffed sleeves, button-shut neck closures, a short collar and the now distinctive soft pique cotton fabric.
Since that time, the polo shirt has become a much-loved favourite in the British wardrobe and is also still hugely popular with tennis champs, including our own Andy Murray!
Our classic Realm & Empire polos are given an extra vintage feel with a garment-dyed finish. Featuring flat-knit collar and cuffs, robust, 100% heavy cotton piqué, gunmetal finish bar buttons and R&E embroidery on the chest, it’s the perfect garment to dress up or down as the mood takes you – and in great new season colours too: a timeless wardrobe staple.
