The Rugby World Cup 2015 is fast approaching and we’ve been lucky enough to catch up with international Rugby legend and RWC15 ambassador Will Greenwood to chat about his career, the upcoming tournament and our new AW15 collection.
Will was part of England’s triumphant 2003 World Cup team and these days keeps himself busy as an analyst for Sky Sports and a national newspaper columnist whilst also helping to develop young rugby talent - and this is all in addition to his work raising the profile of children’s charities. No time for putting his feet up then!
R&E: When did your passion for rugby begin?
My Passion for rugby began at year dot! My father was an England captain in 1960s and an England coach in 1980s. I grew up in Italy where my family had moved to allow my dad to play rugby in Rome. I followed, chased, kicked, caught any ball of any shape or size. I watched game after game, training session after training session and soon started joining in when I was a little kid. I love all sport. I love the family involvement, the community involvement, and the ability to make friend that cross the normal boundaries in life.
R&E: What was the highlight of your rugby career?
The highlight of my rugby career was beating New Zealand in New Zealand – they are the greatest rugby team on the planet and to beat them in 2003 in their own backyard will stay with me forever. But nearly as good was my university rugby at Durham. I have friends for life. We weren’t very good on the field but we were brilliant off it!
R&E: We see you invest time with SportFest - for those who don’t know about this event, what is the idea behind it and why did you want to become involved?
Sport Fest is all about family sport. Play sport, live sport, love sport. There is no event like it in the country. You get to play with legends. There is no vip area. The greatest weekend of sport on the planet!
R&E: What advice would you give the younger generation wanting to make a career in Rugby?
Stay healthy, eat well, train hard, warm up, warm down. Keep working hard at life outside sport to give you a balanced life. Be mentally tough when the hard times come. And go for it when you are fit and healthy.
R&E: Any players we should watch out for during the RWC15?
So many players to mention – Ford and Launchbury for England, Etzebeth South Africa, Imhoff Argentina, Finn Russell Scotland, Milner- Skudder New Zealand, Matt Toomua Australia, Alun-Wyn Jones Wales, Conor Murray Ireland – all of them have the opportunity to write their name into the history books!
R&E: Now that you’ve got a World Cup win under your belt, any advice you would give the current England squad?
Have no regrets – look after yourself, keep sacrificing yourself to the cause, and come match day give everything – pain is temporary the memories last forever!
R&E: Any predictions about how it's going to go?
Final New Zealand v England! Come on England!
R&E: Finally, as you know we’ve just launched our exciting new AW15 collection. What do you like about it and are there any pieces you’ve got your eye on?
As a 42 year old fella everything that you guys do makes me want to hang out with the cool cats! I never know where to start when choosing the items to go for - I'll let you choose for me!
Thanks Will, a pleasure to catch up as always!
