Made popular by legendary polar explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton, a hard-wearing submariner roll neck was an essential part of kit issued to Royal Navy Personnel during the Second World War. Robust and snug, it was perfect for keeping out the North Atlantic chill during the Arctic Convoys and highly favoured by submariners who were often patrolling the bitter waters of the North Sea. We're proud to say that the Realm & Empire Submariner roll neck is Made in UK from an original Royal Navy specification we found in the IWM archives.

Today we thought we would share a behind-the-scene glimpse into our inspiration moodboard from the IWM document and print collections and tell you a little bit more about the construction and detailing of the garment. Enjoy...

Archive Inspiration

In addition to reviewing an original submariner's sweater in IWM's garment archives, our team also spent a great deal of time talking to the curators and reviewing WW2 documents to get a better picture of who exactly would have worn these jumpers and for what. Finding out it was worn by the men whilst performing a multitude of arduous tasks across the ships - from the submarine controllers to the dockyard engineers - we knew the Realm & Empire version had to be warm, durable and nonrestrictive with a soft, comfortable feel.
